Russia Voices Confidence in Energy Partnership with India

(MENAFN) Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak expressed strong confidence that Russia will maintain its energy collaboration with India.

Speaking at the sidelines of Russia Energy Week, Novak highlighted that Russian energy supplies remain in high demand and offer both economic benefits and practicality.

“I’m confident that our partners will continue to work with us, interact, and develop energy cooperation,” Novak stated, as reported by a media outlet. Specifically referring to India, he added, “We continue to cooperate with our friendly partners.”

These remarks followed comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “assured” him India would cease purchasing Russian oil.

Trump said, “I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he [Modi] assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’ve got to get China to do the same thing.”

However, on Thursday, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated he was "not aware" of any phone conversation between Modi and Trump.

Since 2022, India has considerably increased its oil imports from Russia. Data from Kpler reveals that Russian crude made up 34% of India’s oil imports in September.
