US Energy Secretary Clarifies Trump’s Nuclear Tests
“I think the tests we're talking about right now are system tests... These are not nuclear explosions. These are what we call noncritical explosions," Wright told Fox News, elaborating on Trump’s announcement last week instructing the Pentagon to "immediately" initiate nuclear tests.
He explained that such exercises focus on examining "all the other parts of a nuclear weapon to make sure they deliver the appropriate geometry and they set up the nuclear explosion."
“This is not something where people who live in the Nevada desert should expect to see a mushroom cloud at some point," Wright added, reassuring the public about the nature of the tests.
Trump’s directive marks the first push for US nuclear weapons testing in 33 years and comes as other nations have resumed or expanded their own testing programs.
Earlier on Friday, Russian Security Council head Sergey Shoygu indicated that Russia would conduct nuclear tests if other nations proceed.
The Kremlin also noted that while Russia recently tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile and an autonomous torpedo, it has not yet carried out a detonation of an actual nuclear weapon.
